Evidence
Official prescribing information supports replacement treatment for defined growth-hormone-deficiency and growth-failure populations. It does not establish bodybuilding benefit, safe nonmedical use, or that adverse effects can be prevented by self-monitoring.
Interactions & monitoring
Fluid retention and edema, arthralgia, myalgia, carpal tunnel symptoms, impaired glucose tolerance or diabetes, intracranial hypertension, hypersensitivity, lipoatrophy with repeated injection sites, and product-specific contraindications including active malignancy and certain acute critical illnesses. Pediatric warnings include slipped capital femoral epiphysis and scoliosis progression.
Monitor clinical response and adverse effects under specialist care; glucose, thyroid function, IGF-1 where clinically appropriate, edema/joint or nerve-compression symptoms, headache or visual symptoms, injection sites, and malignancy-related considerations.
Medical context
FDA-approved somatropin products have product-specific pediatric and adult indications. Nonmedical physique or performance use is not an approved indication, and products and delivery devices are not automatically interchangeable.
