Anabolic-androgenic steroid
oxymetholone
Anadrol is an oral steroid used for size, strength and a very full look. The scale can go up partly because of water, so the extra weight is not all new muscle. It fits the bodybuilding description of a mass drug more than a dry finishing drug. Main downsides are bloating, higher blood pressure, worse cholesterol and potentially serious liver injury.
Placebo-controlled trial in 31 men aged 65–80. These were research doses, not a recommended strength or bulking regimen; HDL fell and liver-enzyme elevations were greater in the higher-dose group.
A randomized HIV-wasting trial reported weight/lean-tissue improvement but substantial liver-associated toxicity at studied medical doses.
Cholestatic liver injury, edema, blood-pressure increase, adverse lipids, erythrocytosis and gonadal suppression.
AST/ALT/alkaline phosphatase/bilirubin; blood pressure; edema; CBC; HDL/LDL/triglycerides.
Prescription/historical use for certain anemias; not approved for bodybuilding.
Long-term AAS use was associated with myocardial dysfunction and coronary atherosclerosis.
