Dutasteride is discussed for slowing hair loss and is also used for urinary problems from an enlarged prostate. It lowers DHT more broadly than finasteride and stays in the body much longer. Hair changes still take months, with sexual side effects, breast changes and effects on semen among the tradeoffs.
AVODART's enlarged-prostate indication. Hair-loss use has separate trial evidence and is off-label in the United States; the BPH label is not a steroid hair-protection protocol.
Human trials confirm DHT suppression, including during testosterone administration. It does not block androgen receptors or protect against all AAS effects.
Sexual adverse effects, fertility changes, breast symptoms, mood concerns and fetal risk from capsule exposure during pregnancy.
Health problem link: DHT-mediated prostate enlargement; sometimes hair loss under clinician care. PSA interpretation changes on therapy.
Approved for benign prostatic hyperplasia; hair-loss use is off-label in many jurisdictions.
