Finasteride helps slow male-pattern hair loss by reducing DHT made from testosterone. Hair changes take months, and it does not block the effects of every androgen used on cycle. Sexual side effects, breast tenderness and mood changes can occur.
PROPECIA male-pattern hair-loss indication, not the higher-dose BPH formulation. Continued treatment is needed to sustain benefit, with periodic reassessment.
Controlled studies and labeling support DHT reduction in specific indications. It does not block the androgen receptor or neutralize DHT-derived steroids.
Sexual adverse effects, mood symptoms, fertility changes, breast symptoms and fetal risk from handling crushed tablets during pregnancy.
Health problem link: androgenetic hair loss/BPH in appropriate patients. Track symptoms and clinician-directed PSA interpretation when relevant.
Approved for male-pattern hair loss and benign prostatic hyperplasia; not approved as general protection from AAS adverse effects.
